Description

Marina Abramovic has been making groundbreaking art for 50 years, and now turns her gaze inward, to reveal her past with utter candor in a narrative guaranteed to shock and delight. After withstanding a difficult childhood, she met Ulay, a performance artist and the love of her life, with whom she collaborated for 12 years until they ended their partnership dramatically atop the Great Wall of China. Marina has performed punishing art to illustrate the courage we can find within; she's been cut, burned, and had a gun held to her head as the ultimate test between artist and viewer. Her 2010 MoMA retrospective, "The Artist Is Present," drew 850,000 visitors to sit across from her, nonverbally connecting, and she's enraptured a new generation of luminaries who've sought her as a collaborator, among them Lady Gaga, Matthew Barney, James Franco, and Jay-Z. Told with a charismatic voice, WALK THROUGH WALLS will be the one piece of Marina's art that anyone can take home."

Reviews

Could this be her bravest work of performance art to date? ... Rawly intimate and weirdly mesmeric. Observer Enchanting and emotionally raw, Walk Through Walls is an honest, gripping, and profound look into the heart and brilliant mind of one of the quintessential artists of the postmodern era. Publishers Weekly, starred review In her new memoir, Walk Through Walls, [Marina Abramovic] exposes herself as provocatively and fearlessly in language as she has done for many years in her largely nonverbal performance art. Her page-turner of a narrative [is] at times shocking...genuinely moving, and always coruscatingly honest. Elle Marina has lived like an unstoppable force of nature, with the kind of power that leaves me feeling breathless and disquieted-while at the same time profoundly impressed, awed, and inspired. As I turn the pages of her book, I hear her voice in my head, as if she were actually narrating the words... Her voice is soothing, calm, and centered. It belies the trauma, fear, and darkness coiled at the root of her impulse to express and expunge. Annie Lennox, Vanity Fair Candidly and vividly sharing her personal struggles as well as her artistic and spiritual discoveries, Abramovic presents a uniquely intense and affecting art memoir.
