Red Herrings for Breakfast

Author(s): OUSBACK ANNABET

Biography

This beautiful and poignant memoir traces the lives of Annabet and Anders Ousback, who grew up in seemingly idyllic conditions in a boat shed in Balmoral. Annabet grew up to be a fashion and clothing designer and manufacturer and Anders became a world recognised chef and was largely responsible for developing Sydney's foodie scene. Their childhoods were marred by domestic violence, benign neglect and emotional abuse. Anders was gay and was tormented by this his whole life, as society at that time did not understand or accept his sexuality. This is really a lovely and sad story, told by Annabet, using snippets of Anders journals to describe his emotions at various points. It covers many areas of interest, especially for Sydney readers, the development of Balmoral in the 50s, 60s and 70s, the hidden face of abuse, the bewilderment and torment many gay men felt during this time, as well as the history of Sydney's cultural evolution, with restaurants such as The Summit and The Wharf Theatre restaurant, to name a few, which flourished under the hand of Anders. Fascinating and really engaging.
