On a bright and beautiful spring day, Pearl, a pig, is dawdling on her way home from school when she most unexpectedly strikes up an acquaintance with a small bone. 'You talk?' says Pearl. 'In any language,' says the bone. 'And I can imitate any sound there is.' (Its former owner was a witch).
William Steig (1907 - 2003) was a prolific American cartoonist, sculptor and, later in life, an author of popular children's literature. Most noted for the books Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, Abel's Island and Doctor De Soto, he also created the character Shrek, who inspired the popular movie series.
