The Polish nation despite, or perhaps because of, its turbulent history has always held poetry and the making of poetry in very high esteem. On occasions it was the poets who took on the mantle of its spiritual and patriotic leaders. This extraordinarily rich heritage has not been generally available in translation to western readers. Marcel Weyland, nurtured in early teens on Polish, and later on in the English poetic tradition, has made it his mission to make this poetry better known, and has succeeded in preserving its message, rhyme and rhythm. The Word: Two Hundred Years of Polish Poetry is the first comprehensive bilingual edition of Polish poetry.
