Plastiki

Author(s): David de Rothschild

Sport

A ripping good adventure tale set on the high seas, Plastiki captures the inventing, building, and sailing of the Plastiki boat across the Pacific by explorer, green leader, and eco-TV-host David de Rothschild. The Plastiki is a one-of-a-kind 60-foot catamaran made out of 12,500 reclaimed plastic bottles and using many renewable energy systems. In March 2010, the sailing vessel set off from San Francisco with a six-person crew to survey the Eastern Garbage Patch, soon-to-be-flooded island nations, damaged and bleached coral reefs, and the acidifying ocean itself. The expedition plans to make landfall in Sydney, Australia this July. Back on land, the author will commence a global speaking tour to recount their findings. National Geographic is documenting the entire voyage and will release their documentary in tbd 2011.

'The Voyage of the Century' - San Francisco Chronicle

David Mayer de Rothschild is a British adventurer and environmentalist, and head of Adventure Ecology, an expedition group raising awareness about climate change. In 2006, de Rothschild spent over 100 days crossing the Arctic from Russia to Canada, which saw him become one of only 42 people, and the youngest British person, to ever reach both geographical poles. He had already become one of only 14 people ever to traverse the continent of Antarctica, and was part of a team that broke the world record for the fastest ever crossing of the Greenland ice cap.
