Considered by many critics as one of the best novels of the 20th Century, The Master and Margarita is undoubtedly brillant and quite unique. It defies classification being part satirical black comedy and part fantasy. The story begins with the devil visiting 1930s Soviet Russia, with a talking demonic black cat called Behemoth. Bulgakov wrote the novel between 1928 and 1940. Due to Soviet censorship the novel wasn't published in full in the USSR until 1973.
